Which it is a particulate filter DPF / FAP

What is a DPF also known as FAP in some French vehicles, is a device installed in the exhaust system of modern diesel vehicles to reduce emissions and meet European emission standards. It does this by trapping the soot (particulate matter - PM) from the exhaust gases as they flow out of the exhaust. They have been in common use in passenger and light commercial cars since around 2003 in preparation for Euro 4 standards in 2005. Peugeot, Renault and BMW were the first to adopt. Euro 5 emissions regulations in 2009 forced diesel and light commercial cars to have a DPF installed, and Euro 6 2014 introduced new emission restrictions. As with any type of filter, a diesel particulate filter must be cleaned regularly to function properly. In this case, the process is known as regeneration, where the soot is burned, which can be seen as an explosion of white smoke emanating from the exhaust, leaving a residue of ash inside the DPF. DPFs have been in common use in light commercial and passenger cars since around 2003 in preparation for Euro 4 (2005) standards, with Peugeot, Renault and BMW taking the lead. Euro 5 (2009) made diesel and light commercial cars mandatory to have a DPF installed and Euro 6 2014 will further strengthen it.

           

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I TAKE INTO ACCOUNT?

  • It is often said that you must "go great" on the highway to clear the DPF. Please note this is only partially true. If the DPF is blocked beyond regeneration capacity or blocked due to ash residue, it will do more damage to your engine.

  • There are many DPF cleaning additives available that promise a magical cure for DPF. We have yet to find one that will clear a blocked filter and it certainly will not clear an Ash blocked filter. However, some products can be helpful in maintaining a functional DPF in good health.

  • DPF units are closely linked with other emission components, if these parts do not work properly, they can help to block the DPF, similarly, a blocked DPF can damage these components due to excess back pressure.

  • DPF units are located close to the Turbo, if the turbo is leaking oil, it can help block the DPF, similarly, a blocked DPF can damage the turbo due to excessive back pressure.

  • Some PSA engines installed in Peugeot, Renault, Ford, Volvo and Nissan have an on-board fuel additive system connected to the DPF to aid regeneration. It is important to maintain this system and refill it with the additive (only available from major dealers for approximately £ 130 per tank), otherwise it will block the DPF. In our experience, this is often neglected, even by major distributors due to cost. If you have removed the DPF, this feature is no longer required and can be disabled.

  • Some vehicles have a dedicated DPF or an excellent emission or anti-pollution warning light, however many have only one engine light on. It is important to verify by diagnostics why the light is on and it is not recommended to turn it off without investigation.

  • DPF's work is complex and should only be done by experienced professionals with the right specialized equipment. All work on a DPF must be completed with the appropriate recalibration or reset on the vehicle's ECU. It is not possible to simply remove the DPF electronically or simply remove the DPF unit without working on the ECU.

  • In our experience, many garages, including major dealers, are not knowledgeable about DPF and related issues. Our distributors often see customers after spending a lot of money on the wrong solutions, as the DPF failure was not correctly diagnosed.

  • Diesel particulate filters were designed with the good intention of reducing particulate emissions and offering a better environment. In theory, a DPF would trap soot in urban areas and then regenerate on the open road, unfortunately this does not always work well and leads to costly repairs.

  • The fact that DPF units are made from expensive minerals like platinum, that excess fuel is needed for the regeneration process and that ultimately accumulated soot and ash have to go somewhere ... back to the environment, many now question the overall environmental value of any life cycle.
